Tire reviews & comparisons

Ozmen

Hi Folks. I'm Ozmen, and I work as a tire designer. I understand finding a tire isn't easy, as there are so many variables involved. But with me around, tire selection would never bother you again.

Falken Wildpeak AT3w vs General Grabber ATX

Falken Wildpeak AT3w vs General Grabber ATX

The Falken Wildpeak AT3w focuses on wet, wear and winter performance, (hence it's name 3w), but the tire is only better in the wet, but it's very significant. The wear award goes to Grabber, which also performed better on snow slightly, although both tires are 3pmsf rated. On dry roads overall, Wildpeak is clearly better, with better fuel economy, dry traction and having less on road noise. Both tires are equally comfortable however.

BF Goodrich KO2

BFGoodrich KO2 vs General Grabber ATX

The Grabber ATX is better of a performer on dry roads, but lacks slightly in lateral traction, this is felt more off road (particularly on rocks). But other than that provides pretty decent traction values on all sorts of terrains, including snow, where it's significantly better than KO2. And yes it also delivers superior wet performance as well compared to BFG's tire. Now the KO2 although lacks a little on road, particularly in wet conditions, it makes up for it, with superior off-road performance. It provides a more durable construction, and offers consistent performance in all sorts of rugged terrains.

General Grabber A/Tx

General Grabber A/TX Review

The General Grabber A/TX is overall a decent investment of a tire. It provides you with good dry traction, I'm gonna say okay wet traction, nice hydroplaning resistance and is the best when it comes to wear, so it's going to last a long time. The siping on this thing is also full depth, so even with wear, they are not going away and you are still going to get traction, that good new. Bad news is that they are not too good in wet to begin with, so you gonna have to compromise a little bit in this area. And yes, fuel economy is also not going to be impressive either. Other than this, I am really impressed by how well they perform on snow. The 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake rating symbol is definitely justified on this tire.

Toyo Open Country AT3

Toyo Open Country AT3 Review

The Toyo Open Country AT3 is simply a great overall all rounder tire. It comes on my list of best all terrain tires. You can find that article from the search bar. These tires are going to impress on dry roads. They are great to handle and they are going to feel quite sporty even if you take sharp turns with them. Off road, the tire with 3 peak mountain snowflake rating is going to give you ample traction and on other terrains, it offers enough biters to give you a satisfactory ride. But keep in mind, the tire is not so good in the wet department. And yes, it's durability is not impressive at all, if not disappointing. Tread wear is okay (it comes with 65k miles warranty, which is at the high end when you look at other all terrain tires).

Falken Wildpeak AT3w

Best All-Terrain Tires

All-terrain tires are constantly improving, offering a diverse selection to suit various needs. In my ratings, I've found that these tires excel in both on and off-road conditions. However, some lean more towards on-road use, like the Continental TerrainContact and the Cooper AT3 4s. The Cooper AT3 4s even has an XLT variant for enhanced off-road performance. Edit: I replaced the Cooper AT3 with its successor Discoverer Road+Trail, (which is overall better considering all performance metrics). On the other end of the spectrum, we have tires that shine in extreme off-road situations but still perform admirably on regular roads. Notable mentions include the well known DuraTrac (which has been replaced here, by its newer RT version), and the lesser-known but impressive Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T, which I find particularly outstanding in snow. Speaking of snow, the General Grabber A/TX is also a strong contender, nearly matching the Thompson in snow performance, though it might not handle very aggressive snow terrains as well. I plan to keep updating this list, so if you have any questions or need advice on choosing the right tire, feel free to reach out. I'm here to help!

BF Goodrich KO2

Falken Wildpeak AT3W vs BFG KO2 (Updated)

Falken Wildpeak AT3w simple covers all areas which makes an AT tire great. It provides decent on road traction, where it's remarkable on wet with it's dual siping, which also awards it 3 PMSF rating. The tire provide good comfort and is very silent as well and off road, it shines with it's aggressive notches seen everywhere. The BF Goodrich KO2 which is also 3 peak rated, is impressive on snow and is on par on dry. But the tire lacks slightly on wet. But it sure covers for it with it unique rugged terrain performance. Side Note: Did you like this comparison? Or have any questions for me? I'm all ears in the comments section!

BF Goodrich KO2

Goodyear Duratrac vs BF Goodrich KO2

Both tires are popular for these all reasons we discussed. And all the topics we covered here really help you choose a tire which is best suitable for your need, as they both work very differently. And overall, generally you simply can't put a finger on either one of them. Both are great on snow with 3pmsfr. They perform great on roads. There's a bit of a noise issue with Duratrac, but I think its very overrated. Off road, they both are very impressive, but BF Goodrich KO2's durability really takes a large piece of the pie.

Toyo Open Country AT3

BF Goodrich KO2 vs Toyo Open Country AT3

So, wow, that was some detailed discussion, we covered a lot, but I get it, some of you folks are in a hurry, so let me try to summarize everything here (although it's best if you don't miss anything here). So, the BF Goodrich KO2... Well the tire is more durable, of course. They provide better lateral g forces on dry. Good handling and braking. But on wet Toyo Open Country AT3 takes the cake. Off road, things are good for both, except for mud. Both are 3pmsf rated, so good winter traction. And both have enough biters to impress you on rocks. So what do you think here? Do you agree with my assessment, or did I miss any point? Share your perspective below!

Tire alignment

Tire Rotation vs Wheel Alignment

Tires driven even a short distance while under inflated may sustain damage beyond repair. Operating an under inflated tire is equivalent to running a vehicle’s engine without sufficient oil or coolant; while it may appear to function temporarily, serious permanent damage has occurred. Just as adding oil will not reverse engine damage, adding inflation pressure will not fix structural tire damage. The tire remains compromised and can fail even after correct pressure is restored. If a tire is losing inflation pressure, a tire service professional must follow these steps: Check the tire surface and the valve for the source of the leak using water or a soap solution prior to demounting the tire from the rim. Mark the injured area. Totally deflate the tire. Carefully remove the tire from the wheel to avoid further damage, particularly to the bead area. Perform a complete internal inspection to assess structural integrity. For vehicles equipped with dual tire assemblies (duals), if one tire becomes significantly under inflated or flat, the adjacent tire is forced to carry the load intended for both, resulting in a severe overloaded condition. Both tires must be comprehensively inspected by a tire service professional for damage.

Kenda Klever AT2

Kenda Klever AT2 Review

The Kenda Klever AT2 is a pretty nice budget pick. The tire offers 60k miles warranty and is pretty durable, so it's also going to last a while. Sounds like a really nice investment to me. But in the end it all comes down to your need. Are you staying on streets? or going off road? This tire is a good balance between on and off road. So it's 50% on and 50% off road. It's good tread depth (14/32" of the tire here), is quite deep enough to evacuate dirt/mud (but don't expect mud terrain performance out of them). It has good load rating, and is also 3 PMSF rated, so it's not going to disappoint on snow.

Falken Wildpeak MT

Falken Wildpeak MT Review

So what's great about this tire? It provides exceptional off-road, dry, and wet traction. It is a very durable and reliable. It tackles noise well, with variable pitch technology. What can be improved? It has high rolling resistance, so is not a fuel-efficient and with high rolling resistance they are going to wear faster. Not comfortable on highways. Tire has fewer sizes option.

Tire replacing

Can I replace Just One Tire?

So overall it's not recommended to replace just one tire. But if you dig in deeper, the reason is tread depth difference, which can cause uneven wear patterns. You want to make sure that the tread depth of all tires are as close as possible. So if your tires are fairly new, and there is very little tread depth difference between them, you can simply swap the tire without worry ting too much. Though its still best to contact the shaving companies near you, so that your tires offer the best performance and safety values. Replace your tires with radial tires of the same size, load range, speed rating, and maximum cold tire pressure rating (as shown on the tire’s sidewall). Mixing radial and bias-ply tires on your vehicle can reduce braking ability, traction, and steering accuracy. Using tires of a different size or construction can cause the ABS to work inconsistently. See page for DOT tire quality grading information, and page for tire size information. Replacement wheels are available at your dealer. It is best to replace all four tires at the same time. If that is not possible or necessary, replace the two front tires or two rear tires as a pair. If you replace just the front tires, move the rear tires to the front, and install the new tires on the rear. Replacing just one tire can seriously affect your vehicle’s handling. If you ever replace a wheel, make sure that the wheel’s specifications match those of the original wheels If you must continue driving with a flat tire, follow all the procedures and precautions described on page . Never use a tire repair agent in a PAX system tire, and never repair a PAX system tire by yourself. Repair or replacement must be done by a Honda dealer or an authorized Michelin PAX system dealer. Do not replace the PAX system tires and wheels with conventional tires and wheels. Doing so would disable the PAX system and the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and may void your new vehicle warranty. Your vehicle is equipped with the Michelin PAX System which, together with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), enables you to continue driving even if one or more of your tires loses its pressure. The tires and wheels on your vehicle are specially designed for the PAX system, and the PAX system is specifically designed and fine-tuned for your vehicle. Because of these reasons, use only the wheels and tires designated in this owner’s manual. Never mix PAX system wheels or tires with conventional wheels or tires. If you ever hear the chains contacting the body or chassis, stop and investigate. If the chains have loosened, retighten them. Make sure they do not contact the brake lines or suspension. Remove the chains as soon as you begin driving on cleared roads. 362 On U.S. Touring model only Important Precautions Michelin PAX System https://www.ustires.org/sites/default/files/2024-08/Care%20and%20Service%20of%20Passenger%20and%20Light%20Truck%20Tires%202017_0.pdf
