Tire reviews & comparisons

Ozmen

Hi Folks. I'm Ozmen, and I work as a tire designer. I understand finding a tire isn't easy, as there are so many variables involved. But with me around, tire selection would never bother you again.

BF Goodrich KO2

Continental TerrainContact AT vs BF Goodrich KO2

Out of both tires, its pretty obvious why Continental TerrainContact, being one of the least aggressive tire, does a better job on highways, in both wet and dry conditions. Though it's winter traction could have made it a better all-season tire, though its missing with 3 peak mountain snowflake rating. BF Goodrich KO2 on the other hand, does so much better off-road, though still on sand it lacks to it's competitor. I've explained why over there.

BF Goodrich KO2

Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus vs BF Goodrich KO2

The Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus is a good tire but only if you stay on highways more. The tire's light weight provide amazing fuel efficiency, and tread life, and overall, it's quite effective on both on and off road traction. But the tire lacks durability wise, and that's where the BFG KO2 comes in. This tire lacks on roads, but really puts up for it off road in all types of rugged terrains. And for snowy terrain, I've really no problem with either of these tires, and both of them are 3 peak mountain snowflake rated.

Falken Wildpeak AT3w

Falken Wildpeak AT3w vs Goodyear Duratrac

The Falken Wildpeak AT3w focuses on wet, winter and wear (the 3 w in it's name), and out of these, I have to say it's great in all of them, well except for wear in general. On the other hand, the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac although can not outperform Wildpeak on a few areas, it really shines where most AT tires don't even dare to go, Mud. The tire is also great on rocks, dirt and even gravel (despite not having any stone ejectors). And for snow, besides providing 3 peak mountain snowflake rating (like Falken AT3w), it also offers studable lugs for enhanced ice traction.

Michelin Crossclimate 2

Michelin Crossclimate 2 Review

The Michelin Crossclimate 2 is one of the best tires out there for snow, it's snow traction is even on par with some of the average winter tires. That's why the tire earn 3 peak mountain snowflake rating. The tire also excels a lot in dry and wet conditions, where dry traction is a little better and on wet roads, as the tire offers less no of total sipes and is not as efficient in case of hydroplaning. But it's not really a drawback, as it's wet traction is still better than other premium all season tires. But the tire does have drawbacks, and the first one is the noise. It's on road noise levels are high and not impressive and they get poor with wear, which is also not great. The tire although provides good fuel efficiency, it's softer compound where provides you with better ride comfort as bumps get absorbed, it's prone to wear. But looking at the performance, it's a tiny price to pay, which remind me, the tire is also not cheap.

Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus

Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus vs BF Goodrich Trail Terrain

Both tires are mild all-terrain tires, and out of them, the BF Goodrich Trail Terrain performs better on dry roads, in terms of traction, noise, fuel economy and wear. In comparison, on Pirelli Scorpion AT+, you get to have superior off road capability, and wet traction on highways.

Cooper AT3

Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT vs Falken Wildpeak AT3w

Overall it's pretty evident now, that the Cooper Discoverer AT3 is better suited when it comes to highway stability, and although its grip is on par with Wildpeak in wet, it provides better dry traction along with fuel consumption and overall comfort. But tire lacks off road and that's where Falken Wildpeak AT3w comes in with it's durability and aggressiveness. The tire's also better in snow, despite both of them awarded with 3 peak mountain snowflake rating. Going away note: Enjoyed this comparison review or have any opinion? I encourage you to voice it in the comments!

Summer tire

Can I replace run flat tires with regular tires?

Lastly to wrap it all up, there is only one case in which replacing run flat tires with normal ones ensures safety and that is when all four tires are being swapped with the same type of tire. If they are being mixed then it should only be done for a small period of time in case of an urgent situation. It is not recommended as a permanent change since it is very unsafe for your motor mobile and you.Contemplating all the advantages and drawbacks of the situation of the tires along with seeking professional help is highly advocated.

Goodyear 4Seasons Gen 3

Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen 3 Review

Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen 3 is a great all season tire which is capable of handling dry and wet roads in both summers and winters. The tire gives you a great dynamic response and communicates with the steering really well. The most highlighting feature of this tire is it's handling performance on dry asphalts. But this comes at a little cost, literally too, as the tire with such high grip, also produces high rolling resistance values. So with more rolling resistance, the tire consumes more fuel. But the good thing is, it lasts a long time, as it's stiff compound is less prone to wear comparatively.

Hankook 4S2

Hankook Kinergy 4S2 Review

The Hankook Kinergy 4S2 is a pretty decent pick, where the tire is jack of all trades, but master of none. It checks all boxes related to traction. On dry roads, its thermal adaptive polymer is very resistant and does not lose its friction properties. And on wet roads, it offers dual siping with reinforced foundations for stability, providing superb wet braking, and hydroplaning resistance, though lacking in handling. In winter conditions, its snow vices, multiple groove notches, and narrow section width earn it a 3-peak mountain snowflake rating. So all is great, except for its fuel and treadwear, which are very lacking.

Nitto Ridge Grappler

Nitto Ridge Grappler vs Toyo Open Country AT3

So out of both tires here, the Toyo AT3 is better on roads, as it provides better traction, on both wet and dry, though it's wet performance can still be improved. The tire also has 3pmsf rating unlike the Nitto Ridge, and provides ample snow traction. But it can't outperform Nitto Ridge Grappler off road, as it's a weaker tire in comparison that can not handle rugged terrains as confidently.

Michelin Defender LTX MS

Michelin Defender LTX MS Review

Michelin Defender LTX MS is a overall good pick for all season tire. But keep in mind that the tire is more inclined to performing better on wet roads than on dry. The dry grip of the tire is not as impressive, as it does provide you with higher rolling resistance but this helps the tire in other ways, as having a lower rolling resistance makes it a very good candidate for saving on fuel, and it also helps in the tread wear department. That's why the tire takes so long to wear off. Also if dry grip is important to you, go with higher speed rating. Defender offers speed ratings of T, R and H, so go with the highest, H.

Speed rating

Tire Speed Ratings

So, a speed rating is not just about speeds but it tells you about how fast you can take your tire up to. With higher speed rating, the the tire gets better grip so overall handling performance is improved. But with more grip comes more rolling resistance, or in other words, the tire takes more energy to roll, so that would mean more fuel consumption. It would also affect the tread wear of the tire, as with more rolling resistance, the rib would rub with the surface it's on with greater force.
