Tire reviews & comparisons

Ozmen

Hi Folks. I'm Ozmen, and I work as a tire designer. I understand finding a tire isn't easy, as there are so many variables involved. But with me around, tire selection would never bother you again.

BFG KO2

Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse AT vs BF Goodrich KO2

Both all-terrain tires are coming in at the extreme ends on aggressiveness scale. That's why Workhorse A/T does so much better on road, and BFG KO2 off-road. But even on roads, wet traction is seen better on KO2, whereas snow performance, fuel economy, wear and noise is better handled with Wrangler Workhorse. Off-road although KO2 take away the bigger piece of the pie, it still lacks on sand due to it's stiffer sides.

Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac

Yokohama Geolandar X-AT vs Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac

Both hybrid tires are pretty great, but Goodyear DuraTrac lacks in the needed durability, that's why its not so great on rocks. Though its pretty good when it comes to mud, as you get much better evacuation capabilities on this tire. You also get a better design for highways as well in its case, though the tire is very loud. Yokohama X A/T on the other side, provides superior comfort capabilities there combined with snow traction and with it's 3 ply sidewalls, it lets you crawl on rugged tracks with more confidence.

Firestone Destination XT

Firestone Destination X/T vs Falken Wildpeak AT3w

Both tires here are aggressive all-terrain though still, out of them, Falken Wildpeak AT3w does better in almost all types of rugged lands, including rocks, and mud. Though sand and snow traction is dealt with better on Destination X/T. On road, Firestone offers superior dry performance, whereas Falken gives you top-notch traction on wet.

Falken Wildpeak AT3w

Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse AT vs Falken Wildpeak AT3w

Both all-terrain tires although look pretty aggressive, the Workhorse A/T provides a better grip on dry roads, superior noise reduction, fuel economy and off-road it's also great on sandy dunes. Falken AT3w on the other hand is superb on wet roads, and off road it shines on rocks and even a little bit of mud with its one of the deepest tread voids, reaching up to 19/32".

Firestone Destination X/T vs Toyo Open Country AT3

Firestone Destination X/T vs Toyo Open Country AT3

Firestone Destination X/T is an aggressive all-terrain tires, which provides better wet grip and snow traction, though both tires are 3pmsf rated. Off-road this tire is better on sand, mud and rocks, as I've just explained above. Toyo AT3, on the other hand, does better with dry roads, offers better tread wear, and gives you a very quieter ride, though with packed shoulders it lacks in providing efficient self cleaning tread, its still amazing on gravely roads.

General Grabber A/Tx

Sumitomo Encounter A/T vs General Grabber A/TX

Both tires are overall pretty great, but with more on-road aligned structure, the Sumitomo Encounter A/T does better on roads, whereas, the General Grabber A/TX is better suited for rugged tracks.

Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac

Firestone Destination X/T vs Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac

Both tires are aggressive all-terrain options, where the Goodyear Duratrac is a lot more, so much that it should be considered rugged terrain tire (which lies between A/T and M/T). So having said that, it's not surprising to see this tire doing better on rugged paths, whereas Firestone X/T providing superior traction on highways. Though both of them are really great on snow, offering 3 peak mountain snowflake ratings.

Falken Wildpeak AT Trail

BF Goodrich Trail Terrain vs Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail

Both of these tires offer great light all-terrain options. Out of them, the BFG Trail Terrain does a better job off-road, on rocks, dirt, gravel, and even a bit of mud. It also brings in better snow performance as well, though both tires are 3-peak mountain snowflake rated. On the other hand, the Falken A/T Trail is superior on roads (in terms of traction) in both wet and dry conditions, though it does not do so great with noise and fuel efficiency comparatively.

Goodyear Workhorse All Terrain (A/T)

Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse AT vs Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT

Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse A/T is one of the lightest all-terrain tires that you can get, as it's weight is almost as much as an average passenger tire. So this, combined with biters, its able to provide you with amazing climbing abilities on rocks and sand, though its lateral traction need help (but only off-road). On road, it's pretty great, in dry traction, fuel economy and noise. Cooper AT3 on the other side, is great on both wet and dry on roads, and off-road it gives you superior biting power in all directions including "laterally" where its competitor lacks.

General Grabber A/Tx

General Grabber A/TX vs Firestone Destination X/T

Both tires although provide great overall capabilities, there are a few sections where each of them perform differently. For example on dry roads although both tires perform equally the General Grabber A/TX offers superior wet traction (though overall, compared to other A/T options, its not that impressive). Firestone Destination X/T on the other side, is jack of all trades, master on none, so although it may seem it lacks in all departments, its only with a little margin, well, except for the wear, Grabber ATX is one of the top performing ones in that section.

BF Goodrich KO2

Sumitomo Encounter A/T vs BF Goodrich KO2

Sumitomo Encounter A/T is a more on road oriented tire, so it's much better in dry and wet gripping performance areas. You also get to have a longer lasting tread, better on road comfort, fuel economy and steering response, though off road, it lacks in comparison. And that's where BFG comes in. BF Goodrich KO2 is the most durable tire you can get, that's why I rated this tire for it, in my list of top all time A/Ts, so with stronger design its capable of going on to challenging terrains.

Toyo Open Country RT

Yokohama Geolandar X-AT vs Toyo Open Country RT

Both are rugged terrain tires with mud terrain shoulder lugs, yet the Yokohama Geolandar X-AT offers better mud and sand traction. And on highways, the tire is better in wet traction, fuel consumption, comfort and snow traction. On the other side, the Toyo Open Country R/T provides better dry grip, tread life, and noise dampening.
